In order to compete with Canva, this startup has raised $11.6 million for its design platform.
Startups appear to believe there is still a lot to be mined from the “easy-to-use design platform” market despite Canva’s $26 billion valuation. Professional Adobe tools remain, admittedly, challenging for the majority of users. Perhaps this is why Berlin-based startup Kittl has now raised $11.6 million (€10.8 million) in Series A funding for its design platform that, according to the company, enables individuals to “easily turn ideas into graphic products.”
Left Lane Capital was in charge of the most recent financing round. Europe’s Speedinvest and a number of angel investors, including former Bebo CEO Shaan Puri, co-founder of Intercom Des Traynor, and product leaders from Calm, Amazon, and Instagram, also participated.
The venture capital firm Left Lane Capital, based in New York, is best known for its investments in GoStudent, Wayflyer, and Masterworks, among others.

Kittl, which was co-founded by Nicolas Heymann and Tobias Saul, provides web-based graphic design tools for making postcards, labels, logos, and other designs.

By removing the obstacle of a steep learning curve, we make it possible for users to quickly and easily create designs of a professional quality with Kittl. With just a few clicks, our features are intended to simplify complicated design processes. Our rivals either concentrate on basic tools that provide only a limited range of creative freedom or require a significant amount of training and practice to become proficient at.
Kittl began as Heritage Type, which was founded in 2020 by Heymann and Tobias Saul. In October 2021, the company raised a seed round of €1.6 million, which led to the rebranding of the company.
Especially noteworthy is Heymann’s statement that they intend to “double down on existing AI and machine learning efforts” in light of the likelihood that AI will soon replace many of these instruments.

In a statement, Left Lane Capital principal Magnus Karnehm said, “Kittl’s easy-to-use platform democratizes the creation of professional-grade graphic design.” Kittl’s laser-focused focus on creating a platform that spans ideation, creation, and ultimately monetization of graphic design is the sole reason for its rapid growth in user base and user engagement.
